The need is clear: to permit a regulation of the height of strap making the seat absorbing a part of energy in case of impact. Proper belt placement insures the seat edge is utilized during a crash rather than driver’s shoulders. With this target we doubled the shoulder belt adjusting slots to better adjustment for various driver heights. In this way, in case of impact, the vertical force will be supported by the seat improving safety of the driver.
COOLING VENTILATION HOLES INTEGRATED IN BACKREST
External temperature and driving conditions of the driver are one of the critical areas in which FIA is working to improve safety of crews. The back, in the lumbar area in contact with the seat is even more complex. It is thanks to ergonomic studies made for OEM that we tested a solution that includes seatback holes allowing for hot air exchange to improve driver and co-driver cooling. We are developing an improvement to equip the seat with a forced air cooling system that the current seat could match in the future. A pump ventilation with connecting tubes and interchangeable air expansion seatback cushion.
CONSTRUCTION: HYBRID CARBON FRAME (HCF)
HCF is a method of construction where carbon is used in conjunction with fiberglass to reinforce, strengthen, and stiffen the structure of the seat. The result is a hybrid seat shell (frame) which is essentially part carbon and fiberglass.
Extensive dynamic and structural testing has been done to ensure that the shell is reinforced in strategic areas on the back to improve the overall structural integrity. The result is a seat that has high side impact resistance, especially in the key areas which are subject to higher loads.
CONSTRUCTION: RESIN TRANSFER MOLDING (RTM)
RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) technology is used on the Sabelt GT-200 and GT-300 seat models to maintain strict control of the thickness, uniform application of the resin, and other technical values of the shell. The benefit of accurate and defined material thicknesses at strategic points is a stable behavior under impact and reduction of overall weight while maintaining maximum rigidity.
The combination of HCF and RTM technology allows Sabelt to offer several of the technical advantages and weight savings of a full dry carbon seat at a fraction of the cost.
Larger harness slots allow greater adjustability and routing of the harnesses to aid in driver comfort and safety, especially important in taller drivers. Shoulder slots on the Sabelt seats are angled to follow the curve of the driver’s shoulders.
HANS compatible seats have been design to provide enough space to allow the head to be as close as possible to the seat shell with a HANS device. Without this feature the position of the drivers head with the Hans collar created discomfort.
All of the race seats in Sabelt’s program have been designed based on the specific tests and specifications provided by FIA to be used with a Hans Device.
NEW ERGONOMIC CUSHION
The traditional two pieces’ backrest and base cushion is made up of only one piece and improves the lumbar filling of seat and driver’s comfort.
Horizontal seams help the circulation of air and reduce back perspiration. Managing body temperature is an important aspect in any form of professional motorsport or track use, especially when ambient temperatures are higher. The priority of the Sabelt seats is to provide the structure to keep the driver safe while providing solutions to increase the comfort so that the driver’s full focus can be on performing.
Leg padding on the Sabelt seat range has been determined by the use of an anatomic OEM mannequin to determine the proper thickness of the foam for optimal driver position.
The leg padding is removable in all Sabelt race seat models. This is important for adjustability and the need of replacement on an area subject to greater wear.
There are also drivers who prefer to have custom foam inserts designed for their bodies and seating position, so the ability to remove the padding on the seat is important.
Many Sabelt models have split foam legs to enhance the movement of the drivers left and right legs. The independent movement reduces the resistance needed for the leg movement.
FOAM AND UPHOLSTERY
Sabelt seat covers and cushions are produced to compliment the ergonomic design of the seat shell. The fabric used is a porous material that prevents body movement for improved support. This is important in the case of an accident, and allows the driver to have high concentration and focus when driving.
